  5. It showed some useful information & statistics, but would really put somebody off visiting. It wasn't particularly interesting as it was so bias.

  6. Continued
they are that Slumbai is controlled by the mafia and by corrupted politicians who manipulate the people of the slums so as to get their votes. new houses were going to be built but it has not been done well and the builders have been accused of stealing public land. The state destroyed many of the slums but the destruction was halted and the people of the slums are now rebuilding what they have lost. It is also the largest slum in Asia (the district of Dharivi)

-the process of rent-lords and the mumbai mafia
-the aim of turning it into the 'new shanghai'

  9. Hello again,

The key points of this article are that the area was set up by people who used to live in the outer-suburbs and moved into the city area to get a good job. As you stated last lesson they moved because of the bright lights of the city. There was nowhere to live so they set up the slum district.

In 2004 most of the slums were demolished by the Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh. 300,000 people were left homeless and since then there have been many people try to rebuilt it.

  10. It contains alot of statitistics and facts that are interesting, for example; 40% of Mumbai's police officers live in slums. It shows that authorities dont appear to care much as they accepted payments to look the other way and ignore whatever may be happening in these areas.

  11. It showed some useful information & statistics, but would really put somebody off visiting. It wasn't particularly interesting as it was so bias. (I didn't see the other question :) ). I think that the key points of the article are; there are over 8 million people living in the slums, which gives a good idea of how compact it is. The people who live there are vital roles for the economy, as 40% of police officers live there. However, the area has been manipulated by mafia and gangsters.

  13. The article gives the reader alot of information on the slums in mumbai from when they first started to what goes on there now. It could be to inform people about the dangers of the slums so they avoid them, or it could be to inform the eco-tourists who want to go there about life in slums.

  17. I think it shows the way life in slumbai is so different to the life in MEDC countries. It says that politicians are using these slum areas to gain more votes by protecting the area and prevent it being destroyed

  18. i think it's disgusting how a wonderful city can be controlled by gangs and the locals have to pay the gangs to live there even though it's free to live there

  19. I thought that some parts of this piece of information was quite interesting and eye opening when it said how many people were killed every year when just getting home.

  20. it gets its point across very well and so really shows you how life in the slums can be hard. it gives a good variation of detail and facts that help you to make your own mind up about some of the issues that face the mumbi slums. it is set in a good order as it starts by describing how the slums began and finishs on the more recent topics. the artical, however, may have been slightly biast as it would get more of a reaction if it was overly drematic. overall the artical "Slumbi" gave me the effect that it was trying to get its point across and did it in a very factual way. I like this artical for its factual nature and it had a great effect on me. Thanks mr Lomax

  21. Eight million, of Mumbai's citizens live in the slums. I would have expected it just to have been poor uneducated people, but there is lots of differnt people living in the slums including 40% of Mumbai's police officers live in them which is unbelivable. People first started to live in slums during the 1950, these were mainly immigrants from other parts Maharashtra state. There was no low cost housing available so people began building shanties on empty patchesof land. All this began to transform Mumbai into what many people call 'Slumbai' which became full of gangsters which force people to pay rent on free land which they claim to be their own not even the police try to stop them as they are dangerous also corrupt officials and conniving politicians.
